How To Overcome Negative Thoughts
The most obvious thing that we have to deal everyday is our own very thoughts. Thoughts that come and go, linger and fade, strike us hard. Every single moment we are shattered with millions of thoughts, still we are unable to realise how powerful thoughts can be and like slow poisoning we give way to negative thoughts. Negative thought starts with a mild twittering and gradually builds its nest in our mind. In the words of Stephen Richards “ It is not always possible to do away with negative thinking, but with persistence and practice, one can gain mastery over them so that they do not take the upper hand. ”
Following are some ways how we can overcome Negative Thoughts –
Know Your Thoughts…
The first and foremost thing is to identify the basic pattern of thoughts. Thoughts can be overwhelming and deceptive in nature. Once we get into the labyrinth, we can’t even imagine where it will lead us into. A harmless simple thought can gradually breed and grow into a tremendous negative force and leave us devastated. We need to identify the very fact where our thoughts are becoming NEGATIVE and put a full STOP there. Sometimes we don’t even realize that we are actually thinking negative. So after identifying the negativity we need to replace it with a more POSITIVE note by parallel thinking.
“Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results” – Willie Nelson.
Human mind can do wonders, only we need to train it. Replacing the negative thought doesn’t mean ignoring it, it means overcoming the negative with a more positive note. When we have a negative thought, we should parallelly think just the opposite to counter the negative. Obviously it requires forceful conscious effort until it turns into a habit. This deliberate parallel positive thinking will gradually divert our attention from the negative thoughts or at least ease our mind. Some amount of negativity will linger , but diligently practicing positive thoughts will raise our overall positive vibrations and it will be easier for us to counter our negative thoughts. Deliberately thinking positive about a situation, even if we have doubts in our heart, will bring forth positive results in due course of time.
Mind and body are closely related to each other. Our gestures, postures and facial expressions have much to do with our mood. When we are happy it’s reflected in our body. Similarly the vice versa. Research has proved that our elated and jovial body movement can uplift our mood. That is why an energetic dance performance or simple shaking of one’s own body can uplift the mood. Cheerful screaming or laughing out loud, till the heart aches, can actually do miracles … a positive aura surrounds us making it impossible for any negative thought to penetrate our mind.
A smiling face is the most beautiful face in the world. A simple act of smile can trigger our brain to a feel good effect and this continuous process of smiling and good feeling will finally help our subconscious mind to believe that we are truly happy from inside. The contagious nature of smile not only brightens our day, but also the people around us. Smiling is not that difficult. Recalling a pleasant memory or simply watching a person smiling can broaden the corners of our lips. To the more difficult ones…please fake it, as if you are smiling and gradually it will become your habit. Smile is a great stress buster and relieves the mind of its negativity.
Music is a great healer and a mood uplifter. We associate memories with music. Melancholic note of a music imprints unhappy images in mind and a negativity runs all through. Careful choice of music can save us from this. Light-hearted, fun, even party music are known to have a huge positive impact to our mind. But loud beats in a discotheque may have adverse results ☹ The rhythmic beat of a happy note arouses a positive vibration throughout our body resulting in an elated state of mind.
We are not machines. We cannot programme our mind to a positive track in a single effort. It will take days or even months of conscious effort to reprogramme our mind to a new vision. So till then some amount of negative thoughts will hang around us and it is completely okay to dwell with those thoughts. As we cannot ignore it, the best possible way is to embrace it and keep on trying to change our mind in the subconscious level. “Don’t ever stop believing in your own transformation. It is still happening even on days you may not realise it or feel like it.’- Lalah Delia.
Our mind is like a blank copy – it is us who have the power to write in it. Thoughts are like letters on that blank copy creating our reality. We cannot stop the flickers of negative thoughts, but we certainly can control it to burn the pages. One positive thought can replace hundreds of negative thoughts and we have to believe that we have the control of the steering and we are driving our mind and only positive thoughts can beget positive results
